The myristicin in nutmeg can stimulate the nervous system and cause toxicity. Small amounts typically cause only mild digestive upset, but larger amounts can lead to agitation, a racing heart, disorientation, and in severe cases hallucination-like signs or seizures. Signs appear within 3-6 hours and can last up to 48 hours, so nutmeg-containing dishes like pumpkin pie deserve caution too.
