Uniquely, macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs but not to any other species with reported cases. Vomiting, fever and lethargy appear within 3-6 hours, progressing to hind-limb weakness, wobbliness and muscle tremors by 6-12 hours after ingestion. The exact toxic mechanism remains unknown, and the high fat content also carries a pancreatitis risk. No toxicosis has been reported in cats, but the high fat content still makes it unwise to feed. Most dogs recover within 24-72 hours with supportive veterinary care.
