The caffeine in coffee, tea and energy drinks is a methylxanthine, the same class of compound as chocolate's theobromine, and is dangerous to pets. Toxic signs can appear around 140 mg/kg in dogs and 80-150 mg/kg in cats — both far more sensitive than people. Unused coffee grounds, tea leaves and caffeine supplements are especially risky since even a small amount delivers a concentrated dose.
